Mapping Remittance Resilience: A Regional Analysis of US-Mexico Flows During and After the COVID-19 Crisis
The main aims of this research proposal are to estimate and analyze the origin-destination of remittance flows between US and Mexican states. The study will construct an Origin-Destination Remittance Flows Matrix to map remittances between US and Mexican states, detailing the volume and the propotions each state (US) send and receive (Mexico). This matrix will serve as the foundation for a dependence analysis that estimates how reliant each Mexican state is on remittances from specific US states, highlighting economic interdependencies. Furthermore, the research will develop a model to examine the Impact of local shocks, assessing how economic disruptions in US states affect remittance flows to Mexican states, identifying key transmission mechanisms and their effects. Lastly, the proposal will explore the role of regional contextual Factors during COVID-19 period in maintaining remittance flow resilience during and after the pandemic, considering policy responses, economic recovery measures, and the adoption of technology. Together, these components aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of how remittance flows between the US and Mexico adapted and persisted through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis.
