Academic context
Leipzig University and in particular the Faculty for Physics and Earth System sciences have an established profile in “Sustainable Principles for Life and Health” and are also a centre for the interdisciplinary study of the coupled Earth system and its interactions with society. The Institute for Geography at Leipzig University implements an integrative concept in research, teaching and transfer that addresses geographical and spatial science issues with a focus on social and economic transformation as well as geosystem and anthroposphere-related research questions. Research is carried out using the latest methodological developments referring to corresponding spatial and temporal scales. Areas of excellence such as Life:Earth:Humans, Integrative Biodiversity and Global Dynamics, as well as a diverse and dynamic non-university research landscape in Leipzig, form the scientific environment in which the Institute for Geography acts as a bridge between the Earth system sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
