The positions are part of the Research Council of Norway TOPPFORSK project FEASIBILITY: The socio-political and techno-economic craft of enabling twin transitions. The project studies how societies make large-scale transformations towards climate neutrality and digitalization appear feasible, legitimate and actionable, with a particular focus on the role of knowledge, expertise, valuation, future-making and decision-making.
The two PhD projects are:
1. The epistemic politics of twin transitions
How do societies decide which futures are possible, desirable and achievable? This project focuses on the role of scenarios, models, forecasts, roadmaps, foresight and other forms of anticipatory knowledge in shaping sustainability transitions.
2. Valuation and decision-making in twin transitions
How do societies decide what matters in processes of transformation? This project focuses on how values are translated into indicators, metrics, assessments, governance practices and policy frameworks, and how these shape societal priorities and transition pathways.
The positions are based at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture, NTNU, and will be affiliated with the Centre for Technology and Society and the Climate, Energy and the Environment research group. The candidates will join a larger project team and a cohort of PhD fellows and postdoctoral researchers across NTNU, the Fridtjof Nansen Institute and the University of Oslo.
The positions should be relevant for candidates interested in STS, sustainability transitions, valuation studies, expertise, futures, modelling, policy, climate and energy transitions, digitalization, and qualitative social science research.
