PhD project: Just Tourism
Tourism is an integral part of many economic strategies and is bound up with diverse economic, social, ecological and political injustices. The concept Just Tourism examines the ethical considerations of promoting different forms of tourism and their politics and policies, amongst operators, government and publics.
Under the supervision of Prof. Brockington and Dr Angelos Varvarousis , the candidate will develop a doctoral research program that delves into the meaning and practices of Just Tourism. This will entail a theoretical exploration of the theories of justice that underpin this concept, an elaboration of the ways it has been applied and used globally, and then a series of empirical investigations into how it has been, or actually might be applied. The latter examine the contradictions, difficulties, successes and synergies of the idea. In close collaboration with the research team, the selected candidate will be able to: develop a doctoral thesis on a topic related to the project, assist in the development of the research project, present and publish papers related to the research findings, and help organize and participate in the project’s conferences and seminars.
The successful candidate will have considerable freedom to develop their own programme of work, which may entail qualitative or quantitative methods, or both. They must elaborate what they propose to do, and how it fits the call, in their letter of application. Applicants who are able to work in East African contexts, and have priori experience of working there and speak the appropriate languages are particularly encouraged to apply. During the course of the PhD position the successful applicant will write up to two research articles during the course of their studies and complete a doctoral thesis by either monograph or publication route.
The selected applicant will become part of the María de Maeztu research team (CEX2024-001506-M) and will join the UAB PhD programme and received training that will allow them to become an independent researcher. They will also join the CONJUST team (www.condjust.eu). Collaborations across the team will be encouraged. Applicants are encouraged to contact Prof Brockington with any enquiries about this role. Some flexibility on the start date is possible.
