It is my great pleasure to announce an opening for a Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor in Social Science or Humanities approaches to Ecosystem Restoration, to join us in the research program SAFIRE: Safeguarding Biodiversity through Interdisciplinary Research on Habitat Restoration at the University of Oulu (Finland). Application deadline 19.05.2025

We invite applications from candidates with strong academic backgrounds in any social sciences or humanities discipline, as well as from interdisciplinary fields (including anthropology, human geography, environmental humanities, history, sociology, science and technology studies (STS), and others) and with an interest in environmental matters. You can apply for an Assistant of Associate Professor level appointment.
SAFIRE is a fully interdisciplinary program which seeks to incorporate social sciences and humanities throughout its activities. The position offers a generous starting package (PhD or post-doc and a research budget), and the appointed candidate will join a very vibrant community of social science and humanities scholars, and a wider interdisciplinary team.

To get an idea of what SAFIRE may look like as a project to work in, you can have a look at the activities and structure of our mature Profi6-funded scheme Biodiverse Anthropocenes | University of Oulu. They serve as an inspiration as we develop SAFIRE.
SAFIRE is funded by the Research Council Finland under a capacity-building grant called Profi 8 for the period 2025-2030.
Please contact me with any questions, I am open to all inquiries. I am the Vice-Lead for SAFIRE, and I have first-hand experience of what it is like to be a Tenure Track appointee under a Profi scheme at Oulu. I moved to Finland just over two years ago to take up just such a position, so I can answer questions about Oulu as a place to live, Finnish academia, Oulu University, etc. Do not be shy in emailing with questions and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
