Nicola Pontarollo is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics and Management at the University of Brescia, Italy, and a member of the PhD Committee at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) in L’Aquila, Italy. He obtained his PhD from the University of Verona (Italy) in 2014. He subsequently held positions as an Assistant Professor at the Catholic University of the North (Chile) in 2014, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Milan-Bicocca (Italy) in 2016, and a Statistical Officer at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission from 2016 to 2019.
He has also held visiting and teaching positions at several international institutions, including the University of Cuenca and ESPOL (Ecuador), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Mexico), and Suleyman Demirel University (Kazakhstan).
His research focuses on EU regional integration, regional resilience and subnational economic growth, the geography of discontent, subjective well-being and deprivation, land use and urbanisation, development economics, and spatial econometrics. He is the author of more than 60 articles in leading peer-reviewed journals, as well as numerous working papers, policy reports, and other publications. He has extensive experience in both national and international externally funded research projects, and has conducted consultancy work for the European Commission.
