North West

Cecilia Wong is Professor of Spatial Planning and Director of the Centre for Urban Policy Studies (CUPS) at the University of Manchester. She is a chartered town planner and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. Her research expertise is on policy monitoring and analysis, strategic spatial planning, and urban and regional development policies. She has conducted major research projects for central government departments (particularly the Department for Communities and Local Government and its predecessors), Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Economic and Social Research Council, Royal Town Planning Institute, Homes and Community Agency, and regional and local bodies. She is currently a member of the ESRC Grant Assessment Panel, chair of ESRC’s Urban Big Data Centre’s Research Approvals Committee and co-editor of Town Planning Review. She was a commissioner on the Lyons Housing Review, member of DCLG’s expert panel on housing and planning and expert panel member of the European Commission’s Urban Audit II.

Cecilia has been a member of the Regional Studies Association since 1994 and has benefited from the activities of the North West Branch especially in the early years under the leadership of Peter White, Keith Grime and Michael Hebbert. As the new Chair of the North West Branch, she would like to continue this tradition in engaging researchers in the North West, especially the younger generation, to create a lively community to debate city and regional development and policy matters. With the current debates on devolution and the northern powerhouse, the North West Branch will continue to lead the way to shape the regional and city-regional research agenda. Our connections with key stakeholders, policy-makers and think tanks in the region will also facilitate the interface between research and policy practice, continuing the long tradition of the RSA.

Please note: The North West Branch is a limited agent for the Regional Studies Association but without any authority to incur financial liability for that Association.
