2019 Latin America Division Conference
The RSA is pleased to support a writing workshop held prior to the Latin America Division Conference. We encourage RSA members to apply to benefit from this training opportunity. The workshop is free of charge and will take place on 28th September 2019.
Writing and publishing in high-impact journals, most of which are in English, has become a requirement to advance in an academic career. For academics, whose native language is not English, as is the case with many Latin American scholars, publishing in these journals has become an additional obstacle in advancing their careers and a constant source of stress. In addition, this has created a situation in which Latin American research on cities and regions occurs mainly in Spanish and Portuguese, which makes it difficult to engage in dialogues with the academic discussions that take place in Anglo-Saxon journals about Latin America.
In this context, the Colombian Association of Urban-Regional Researchers (ACIUR), the Interdisciplinary Center for Development Studies (CIDER) of the Universidad de los Andes, the Latin American Division of the Regional Studies Association and the Regional Studies Association have joined forces to organise a workshop on academic writing and publication strategies in English on urban and regional issues in Latin America. The workshop seeks to train 10 early career scholars (PhD students or scholars who have obtained their PhD within the last 5 years) in academic writing and publication strategies and in English. The goal is twofold. First, improve theoretical production in English about cities and regions in Latin America. Second, improve the writing and publishing skills in English of these 10 people and, therefore, develop capacities in Colombian and Latin American universities.
Participants will be selected according to the originality of their subjects, their theoretical ambition and their potential for publication in English in the fields of urban and regional studies. Priority will be given to those for whom English is not their native language and those who are based in Latin American universities, particularly those affiliated with ACIUR, RSA or CIDER. A balance between men and women will also be sought. Admission to the workshop includes the registration of the workshop as well as lunch and dinner during the day the event. Unfortunately, we do not have funds to finance travel and / or accommodation expenses in Bogotá.

Requirements:
- current PhD student or postdoctoral researcher or professor with less than five years since obtaining their doctoral degree.
- research interests on urban and regional studies, with an emphasis on Latin America
- Non-native English speaker
- Being affiliated with a Latin American university or being a citizen of a Latin American country
