Job Description
Full-time assistant position granted for an initial term of 2 years, renewable after advice from the competent bodies for 2 further periods of up to 2 years (total: 6 years).
The position includes teaching duties and the completion of a doctoral thesis under the supervision of an academic member of the Geography Unit. Teaching duties and research activities are equally distributed in the time load.
Given the important role he/she will play in the pedagogical supervision of the students of the Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Urban Studies 4 Cities (www.4cities.eu) and the Master in Urban
Studies ULB-VUB (https://urbanstudies.brussels/), the candidate will have to demonstrate a very good working command of English.
The candidate’s thesis project must be situated in the field of urban studies and should build on a strong geographical dimension as well as on an empirical approach.
Work locations: Solbosch campus, Plaine campus and Usquare campus
Required title
A 120-ECTS Master’s degree in geography or urban studies (at the time of taking up the post). The candidate must also fulfil the requirements for a doctorate.
Skills required
Autonomy and seriousness in carrying out teaching and research tasks.
Ability to design and implement a scientific research project based notably on an original empirical work.
Ability to communicate in a clear, structured, and approachable way.
Ability to integrate into a team of teachers, teaching assistants and researchers.
Language skills: active command of French and English, both written and spoken. If the candidate does not master French, he/she must make a firm commitment to actively master it after a
maximum of one year in office.
Courses covered
The candidate is expected to participate in the pedagogical supervision of the following courses (list subject to adaptation, on an annual basis):
– GEOG-F419 – Projet d’aménagement urbain (coord. J.-M. Decroly)
– GEOG-F428 – Urban political economy (coord. M. Van Criekingen)
– GEOG-F429 – Urban analysis II (coord. M. Van Criekingen)
– GEOG-F432 – Internship (coord. M. Van Criekingen & B. Wayens)
– GEOG-F433 – Brussels, reading the city (coord. B. Wayens)
The candidate will also participate in the supervision of an excursion in the framework of the Master in Urban Studies programme (GEOG-Y061), in collaboration with VUB colleagues. He/she will also take part the follow-up process of MA theses in the framework of the EMMC 4Cities and the Master in Urban Studies.
