Details of the post can be found here jobs.tcd.ie/

Closing date for applications 12pm July 19th 2019.

The Department of Geography at Trinity College, the University of Dublin, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work with Dr. Cian O’Callaghan on the IRC-funded project Rethinking Urban Vacancy: Addressing the Challenge of Underutilised Land through Innovative Policy Solutions. The postdoctoral researcher will work with Dr. Cian O’Callaghan in collaboration with the Dublin Housing Observatory (DHO) in Dublin City Council on a project to enhance our critical and applied understanding of how urban vacancy is categorised and measured, as well as its underlying structural and contextual causal factors. Rethinking Urban Vacancy will contribute to academic knowledge and inform policy decisions on urban vacancy by filling significant knowledge gaps in two key research questions:

  1. How is urban vacancy categorised and measured in the Irish contest, and how could new forms of measurement lead to more effective policy solutions?; and
  2. What are the underlying structural and contextual factors that contribute to the production of vacancy in its different forms?

In order to achieve these aims the project has the following objectives:

  • Review and analyse existing approaches to measuring urban vacancy to identify granular measurements.
  • Explore and categorise the contextual factors, including policy measures and market conditions, that create barriers to the reuse of urban vacant space in Ireland.
  • Develop case studies to investigate and illustrate the causes of long-term vacancy.
  • Produce a range of typologies of vacancy to inform policy approaches.
  • Use the detailed empirical insights to inform new conceptual definitions and methodological approaches to studying urban vacancy.

Enquiries concerning the post should be addressed to Dr. Cian O’Callaghan ocallac8@tcd.ie

Applicants should submit ONE document containing: a cover letter detailing your suitability for the role; a full Curriculum Vitae; one writing sample (e.g. journal article or book chapter) and the names and contact details of 2 referees (including email addresses), to Dr. Cian O’Callaghan (PI) by noon on July 19th 2019.
