About the position
The Department of geography has a temporary position available as PhD Candidate in ‘Industrializing offshore wind through networks of new technology’.
The 3-year research position as PhD candidate is an educational position that shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a Ph.D. The position is connected to the PhD-program at the faculty of Social and Educational Science, specializing in geography, and the faculty will be your employer. You will be a part of a growing research environment in economic geography, innovation and sustainability transition studies at the Department of geography. You will report to Head of Department.
This PhD project is part of the newly established FME NorthWind (Norwegian Research Centre on Wind Energy) that has as aim to bring forward outstanding research and innovation to create jobs and grow exports, and to facilitate the sustainable development of wind power.
The Centre is led by SINTEF, with research partners NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), UiO (University of Oslo), NINA (The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research), and NGI (Norwegian Geotechnical Institute).
The Centre involves more than 40 national and international industrial partners that, together with the research partners, comprise a world leading consortium for the development of a sustainable wind energy future.
The Department of Geography participates in this interdisciplinary centre and contributes with the social science research. The PhD-position will be organized within the work package 5 Sustainable Wind Development and will focus particularly on the creation of a knowledge base for accelerated deployment of wind energy in the European energy transition supported by Norwegian competence, technology, and resources.
Duties of the position
The PhD is expected to:
- use relevant theoretical perspectives (i.e. global production networks, global value chains, innovation systems, industry clusters, sustainable energy transitions)
- to study how manufacturing firms, supporting organizations, and institutions work and collaborate together to promote innovation, upscaling, serial production, cost efficiency and environmental upgrading within offshore wind
- account for the implications of these activities for regional industrial development
- The candidate must engage in the FME NortWind activities as required.
Required selection criteria
The PhD-position’s main objective is to qualify for work in research positions.
The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in human geography, innovation or sustainable transition studies or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
You must also have good written and oral English.
Preferred selection criteria
It is beneficial that you have skills in Norwegian language or another Scandinavian language.
You should have good skills in conducting social research on industry, in qualitative methodology, including case study design and in academic writing.
- ability to take initiative and work independently;
- positive and professional attitude;
- enthusiasm for fieldwork.
Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 482 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Social Sciences, specializing in geography within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The position is subject to external funding.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
