This is an opportunity to develop your academic career in a dynamic geography department in London with a mission to widen participation in higher education.

The role includes developing a new urban studies cross-faculty teaching programme, the MA/MSc Cities, convening a team-taught module, and the possibility of developing online teaching in the field of urban policy, as well as contributing to other teaching, research, administrative and public engagement activities within the department.

The successful candidate is likely to have a PhD in a relevant subject area, or be nearing completion, and a research track record in urban geography. Preference will be given to expertise in the field of urban policy but other specialisms will also be considered.

  • You will have teaching experience, in design, delivery and convening of courses, preferably at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • You will be research active with an emerging publication profile, and an interest in public engagement activities.
  • You will have an understanding of the specific context of Birkbeck, the principles of widening participation in higher education, and working with mature age, part time, and non-traditional learners.
  • You will be able to work collegially, across disciplines within geography, the social sciences and humanities more broadly.

This is a Lecturer A post, at Grade 7 of the College’s London Pay Scale which is £37,912 rising to £43,333 per annum

The salary quoted is on the College’s London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area.
