‘Red Cross or Red Star? The Tension between Humanitarian and Socialist Internationalism in World War II Aid to Russia’
Collaborative Doctoral Award in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London and Society for Co-operation in Russian and Soviet Studies (SCRSS)
The aim of the project is to approach wartime British attitudes to the Soviet Union from a new angle, focusing on the Society for Cultural Relations/SCRSS, which marks its centenary in 2024, relating them to recent debates about humanitarian aid, and supplying a case study problematizing dominant accounts of aid as apolitical and purely humanitarian.
* The project envisages the use of Russian archives and hence Russian language sources from the second year. Consequently, preference will be given to applicants with Russian language skills, or evidence of language learning aptitude.
