The Institute of Geography/Human Geography at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is offering a
Doctoral research position
in the DFG Research Unit FOR2432, subproject C04 / Sustainable food consumption of the middle class in the rural-urban interface of Bengaluru, India
The part-time position with 65 %, which corresponds to 26 working hours per week of a full-time employee, will be limited for initially three years, starting from 01.08.2019. Salary scale is EG TV-L E 13. The position cannot be shared. Main place of service is Göttingen, but extended field work in India for several months will be required.
FOR2432 covers multiple dimensions of Social-Ecological Systems. The program addresses transition processes in agriculture, ecology, economy, and society that are linked to rapid urbanization, using the South Indian mega city of Bengaluru as an example. Research will be carried out in close collaboration with our Indian partners.
Your duties The subproject aims at understanding changing food practices among middle class consumers, how they feed back into the rural-urban agri-food system and in the demand for ecosystem services. It reveals discourses, policies and regulations with respect to potentials and obstacles for transition towards sustainability. The tasks will be the following: • Conceptual work on agri-food systems and socio-political SES approaches • empirical work (data and insights) on rural-urban food consumption practices, food governance, potentials and obstacles regarding food sustainability • participating in project-related seminars and workshops, presentation and publication of own research results.
Requirements • Highly qualified Master degree in Geography or related fields • Research focus on social geography, Agri-Food Studies, socio-ecological systems • Expertise and experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods (GIS expertise desirable) • Excellent English language skills • Ability and willingness to work in a dedicated team with an international background in Germany and India.
