Scope of Job The Department of Political Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty member in Latin American politics and/or Latin American political economy to begin September 1, 2019. The department is particularly interested in applicants with teaching interests and a research agenda in any of the following areas: Government & Politics of Mexico, US-Mexico border relations, and the politics or political economy of various Latin American nations/regions. The department is open to a wide variety of approaches, including qualitative, quantitative, comparative, institutional, and historical methods. The position continues the department’s effort to build an undergraduate and graduate program that develops interdisciplinary courses anchored in the concepts and methods of political science, while simultaneously crossing disciplinary boundaries to incorporate topics, concepts, and methods utilized outside of political science. The successful candidate will teach upper-division and graduate level courses in their areas of substantive specialization and required lower-division courses in U.S. Federal Government & Politics and/or Texas Government and Politics. The successful candidate will contribute to the vision of creating a bilingual, bicultural institution on the Texas-Mexico border that serves as a gateway to the Americas.

Minimum Qualifications 1) Ph.D. in Political Science or related field from an accredited institution of higher education. ABDs may be considered, but a conferred doctorate by September 1, 2019 is required for appointment. 2) for junior level tenure-track appointments demonstrated potential for strong research and publication record; for tenured appointment at Associate or Full Professor level demonstrated record of research and publication appropriate for appointment and tenure at a senior rank. 3) demonstrated potential for teaching excellence for appointment at the junior level or established record of teaching excellence for appointment at the senior level.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications 18 credit hours or more of graduate level course work in Political Science.
Preferred Qualifications Candidates with experience and/or willingness to teach online. Bilingual/Biliteracy skills in English and Spanish.

Additional Information UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
