Subject area: Applied urban planning and design

The subject includes studies, development and application of theories and methods used in research, development and design in the area of urban planning and design, with a broad theoretical and methodological approach. The subject is trans-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary, integrating technology, natural and social science and also humanities and design. The subject is practice based with the objective to facilitate a long-term sustainable urban planning and design with application on Swedish conditions.

Work description

The position foremost includes research in the subject area and to establish a research environment, which initially includes recruitment of a post-doc and a PhD candidate. Central work tasks are to carry out interdisciplinary research, and to critical examine and analyse the contemporary urban planning and design practices aiming to develop processes and methods in a Swedish context. This includes establishing collaboration with public administration, trade and industry, civil society and individual actors and to develop methods for their cooperation within urban planning and design processes. Moreover the position includes development of practice based research and contributing to the establishment of new and development of existing arenas where planning, architecture, landscape design, art and humanities can interact and actively contribute to the societal development in Sweden. Research in the subject area should deepen the problem formulation of urban planning and design by including ecological, technical, sociocultural, economical, design and political aspects. The position includes self-dependent establishment of new collaborations and research projects, national as well as international, obtain external funding by research application, and lead and develop research within the subject area as well as in cooperation with other research environments at KTH. The position will besides research and development work include supervision and teaching at research level. Teaching at basic and advanced level in The Architect program and The Civil engineering and urban management program may be included. The position can include administration and leadership roles within research and education.
